ICT, basic need, not luxury, Minister Senaratne says at kick-off of SMS for fish info

Inaugurating Tuesday (19)  yet another application developed by the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) – Fish information SMS - Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha extolled the value of ICT. “ICT is a basic requirement of everyone and not a luxury of the elite”, the Minister asserted.

“ICTA  has contributed  splendidly for bringing the  optimum ICT benefits  to all”, Minister  Senaratne commended while speaking further at the kick-off   held at the Fishery Harbours Corporation (CFHC), Colombo.

Extending the tribute to  his own his Ministry staff as well  the Minister pointed out the great improvements achieved by the Ministry  for the benefit of the people. Fish-based exports have been increased 38% while imports reduced  by 23%.  The Corporation’s loss has been reduced from Rs. 123 million to Rs. 19 million.  Fisheries Corporation fish is sold at 123 Fisheries Corporation own sales centres and 225 outlets at CWE shops. 

Ensuring availability of quality fish at affordable price

Referring to plans for ensuring the availability of quality fish at affordable price the Minister went on to say:“We want to extend the sales network so that soon we will have 250 CFC sales centres and 250 outlets at CWE shops for CFC fish.  One of our aims is to reduce the price of fish mainly by removing the increase in price of fish caused intermediaries.  Another of our main objectives is to provide to the citizen quality fish at reduced price”.

Sri Lanka to host UN based World Summit Award

Sri Lanka will be the venue of the  world-renowned e-content awards, WSA this year, WSA Chairman Dr. Peter Bruck announced in Abu Dhabi.    

“The Winners’ events and experts’ conference will be hosted by Sri Lanka in October 2013 and I want to thank the Government of Sri Lanka and particularly ICTA the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka for hosting us in Colombo.  WSA has a network of 164 UN member States and is clearly one of the most successful multi-stakeholder activities in the UN WSIS process,” Dr. Peter Bruck  said at the WSA Mobile Content Awards event held  in the  Middle-East recently.

The WSA Winners' Celebrations and the Gala bring WSA winners together with international leaders, innovators, creators, designers, entrepreneurs and activists  involved in the international e-Content and ICT industries. The Gala attracts high-level guests from all over the world, including Heads of States and government representatives, executives from UN agencies and private sector leaders. These will personally hand over the award trophies to the winners of the Global e-Content contest.

ICTA to set up 40 ‘Nenasala’ ‘Arivaham’s in Northern Province

As yet another step In making the optimum benefits of ICT reach all,  the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) is  to set up 40 ‘Nenasala’s (‘Arivaham’s) in the Northern Province. 

Applications are now called from registered community based organisations for setting up these ‘Nenasala’ ‘Arivaham’s (Wisdom Outlets. Telecentres) in the Northern Province.

Rural development societies, women’s associations, sports clubs, public libraries,  organizations in charge of places of worship and  social groups committed to village development could submit their application under this project. 

The application to be filled in  could be downloaded and information about documents that should be attached to the application  and further relevant information could be obtained by visiting the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) website www.icta.lk.  These could also be obtained by contacting the Divisional Secretariat of the relevant location or ICTA. The completed applications with the required documents should be mailed by registered post or personally handed over to the following address: ‘Nenasala – Arivakam’ Programme – Northern Province, Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka, No. 160/24, Kirimandala Mawatha, Colombo 05. The deadline for receiving completed applications together with all required documents is 27th February 2013.
