World Summit Awards 2009
Impaired Aid, the suite of local language accessibility applications for deaf and blind children - created by Jinasena Properties/Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind under an e-SDI PAP grant – was placed first in the category of e-Inclusion & Participation. The World Summit Award is a global initiative to select the world’s best e-content and innovative ICT applications and operates within the framework of the United Nations’ World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). WSA 2009 attracted 560 applications from 157 countries, making Impaired Aid’s achievement quite significant, both for the e-SDI and Sri Lanka. It also demonstrates that in the area of ICT for disabilities, Sri Lanka displays a level of technical and social innovation on par with that of the most developed countries

In rural areas, there is a lack of teachers in certain important subjects. This led to the requirement of an e-learning project, funded through an e-Society grant, where the foundation would set up a center for children to visit and use self learning interactive CDs to learn English and other subjects.
The center began with computer training and English learning and has now progressed to giving children math and science learning through locally developed e-learning software products as well as products from the Azim Premji Foundation in India.
