Adding another feather to Hambantota district’s cap, owner cum manager of an  ICTA initiated Nenasala  Ms. G. A. Deepika Priyadarshani  was recently  presented with the award  for the best service sector entrepreneur in the district in 2009.
Organised by the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce, the selection was based on a stringent jury process by a panel of experts, the ICT  Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA)  Information Infrastructure Project  Manager, S. Gavashkar said.
The ICTA- initiated Suriyawewa Nenasala  which earned for  Ms. Deepika  the award given at a function held recently  sets her out as an example  when women entrepreneurs are rare and much in demand for boosting national development.
One of the 601 Nenasalas currently spread throughout the island  under a the concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa as a major means to take ICT to the village, Ms.  Deepika’s Suriyawewa Nenasala is located near the Suriywewa market in the Hambantota district.  Ms. Deepika  said that she obtained  valuable support in making her Suriyawewa Nenasala reach the  current standard of quality service to the people.  Nenasalas set up island-wide including the North and East under the 1000 Nenasala programme are telecentres with a difference. What would have remained a prerogative of the urban elite underwent this difference due the foresight of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.  This foresight   set the turning point in making the benefits of ICT  reach the people .  It consisted in the people-friendly  advise the President gave  that these ‘wisdom outlets’ be set up in the milieu of the people where they gather for socio-cultural purposes, the temple, kovil, mosque and the church premises. Entrepreneurs like Ms. Deepika Priyadarshani  and enterprises like the Suriyawewa Nenasala  prove value of the above turning  point, ICTA sources said.
Our  article on the above subject was carried in The Island of Oct. 4, 2010.
