ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) Re-engineering Government Programme Director Wasantha Deshapriya says that implementing the e-Government policy by all government organisations would lead to making   citizen’s life more comfortable than ever before while improving efficiency of the government.
Director, Re-engineering Government Programme of ICTA said so during his addresses at two conferences held in the North last week (2011-03-30th & 31).
The ICT Agency of Sri Lanka held these conferences for promoting the implementation of the e-Government policy in the north recently. The first of these was held at the Public Library in Jaffna on Wednesday 30th. This was followed by the second held at the Jaffna District Secretariat on Thursday 31st.   More than 60 Government personnel including Northern Provincial Council Chief Secretary A. Sivaswamy, Northern Province Governor’s Secretary S. Rangarajah, heads of North Provincial Council Ministries and CIOs participated in the Northern Provincial Council ‘e-Government policy’ conference held at the Jaffna library. More than 100 Government officers including District and Divisional Secretaries and CIOs and other administrative officers of the Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaittivu Districts participated in the ‘e-Government policy’ conference held at the Jaffna District Secretariat.
Speaking further on the occasion Wasantha Deshapriya attested that e-Government Policy provided the basic policies and procedures for implementing eGovernment by all Government organisations. While insisting on the use of e-Government tools such as email, the policy also covers the requirements with regard to online transactions and connected Government.  He further emphasised that the Northern Province which now has a free environment could leapfrog to improve the Government services by using eGovernment. In addition to Wasantha Deshapriya, ICTA Human Resource Development Programme Head Nalini Senasekera and Public Administration Ministry Senior Assistant Secretary and Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) K. A. Vimalendrarajah also made presentations at these two conferences. From these presentations the participants gained an understanding of the e-Sri Lanka initiative, ICTA and ICTA’s e-Government Innovation Projects in general. They were given a detailed exposure on the e-Government policy and strategies for implementing it. CIO Vimalendrarajah’s presentation on “The role of CIOs in implementing the e-Government policy” brought out several specific examples of implementing the e-Government policy in more practical terms. Jaffna District Secretary (GA) Mrs. Emelda Sukumar made  the opening remarks at the workshop on 31st ultimo and was very supportive in making the workshop the great success it was.
