ICTA conducts national ICT workforce survey 2009

The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) has taken steps to conduct a national survey on the ICT workforce in Sri Lanka.

The survey will cover about 600 organisations including government Departments and Ministries, non IT companies (ICT users), software/hardware companies, BPO companies and IT training organisations.

While the survey will be conducted under the guidance of the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) unit of ICTA, MG Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd. will conduct the survey.

The MoU for conducting this ICT workforce survey which will include a full-fledged survey on the IT-BPO workforce, was signed between ICTA and MG Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd. at ICTA premises in Colombo recently [ last Friday (11)].

The aim of the survey is to elicit a clear understanding of the extent and the composition of IT-BOP workforce in Sri Lanka and weigh it against the supply of skilled personnel.

Explaining the relevance of the survey Chief Operating Officer, Reshan Dewapura, ICTA said that currently ICT was pivotal in the socio-economic development of Sri Lanka and that a survey like this was not only highly useful but also a sine qua non in the country’s future development plans.

Monitoring and Evaluation Programme Head, ICTA Jagath Seneviratne, said that similar national surveys had been conducted in 2005 and 2007.

They had been sponsored by the Sri Lanka ICT Association (SLICTA) with the support from the UNDP funded Competitiveness Progranmme and ICTA. These survey reports had been well received by the industry, government, and training institutions, registering a remarkable response rate for the survey, Seneviratne said.

The Government of Sri Lanka and the IT-BPO industry share the goal of significantly improving the skills of IT-BPO professionals in Sri Lanka by aligning the training and educational curriculum with the anticipated demand for such professionals. The achievement of this goal will enable graduates of different disciplines to be gainfully employed, Seneviratne added.

The survey will collect information on overall size and distribution of the ICT workforce, anticipated gaps between supply and demand for the next year, employment opportunities and specific information related to the ICT training institutions in Sri Lanka.

ICTA encourages all survey participants to contribute to the successful implementation of this survey by providing up-to-date and accurate information. Data collection will begin in the third week of September 2009 and the final report is expected in December 2009.

According to Jagath Seneviratne, the 2009 survey will further reduce the gap in information on the demand and supply of the workforce in the country. The successful completion of the survey will provide useful comparisons for the Government, ICT human resource employers and training institutions.

The report will be made available through ICTA website for free download. The 2005 survey report is also available on www.icta.lk for free download.
