The ICT Agency of Sri Lanka together with the ICT Branch of the Ministry of Education took the initiative in organizing the “IT-BPM Career guidance seminar and counseling session” in Batticaloa – a career guidance program which highlights the career opportunities in the Information Technology (IT) and Business Process Management (BPM) sector. The program was aimed at students who are studying at grade 9 and above.
The career guidance program was held at Mahajana College, Batticaloa on the 26th and 27th of September. The participation of students was impressive as there were more than 2500 students and teacher from over 50 schools.

The students were first put into a general seminar which highlighted the opportunitiesin  the IT/BPM sector. Once the students were done with the seminar, they had the opportunity to have personalized counseling sessions where many of their questions were answered by industry counselors. These counseling sessions help deliver a clearer overview of the industry while guiding students according to their interests.

To give students a futuristic perspective of the world, a Virtual Reality (VR) device, and a 3D printer was available. The students were extremely thrilled to have experienced these devices as many of them have seen it for the first time in their life.

The reason for choosing the IT/BPM industry is to break the traditional belief of a very limited number of career paths that exist. The IT/BPM sector is increasingly becoming the employer of choice in the Asian region due to the attractive benefits offered, which is also seen in the Sri Lanka due to the growth rate of the ICT workforce. However, there is significant need to create awareness among school children and job seekers outside.

Feedback collected from students help improve this program even further. The  “IT-BPM Career guidance seminar and counseling session” program ended on a high note. This program had undoubtedly made a significant positive impact on the lives of the students who took part.
