Educate to Innovate Program Launched

‘Teachers are main influencers to students, is a fact identified by many researches done internationally. Hence teachers play a prominent role and needs to be updated with the new shift of the pedagogical approach to deliver content and knowledge to the students. The STEAM education plays a vital role in this. The curriculum of the STEAM education is based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. It is important not to teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, but instead STEAM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.
With the aim of enhancing teachers to gear up and integrate the new pedagogical approach combined with STEAM education, the Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) initiated the ‘Educate to Innovate’ programme. The very first workshop was held at Berjaya Hotel Mount Lavinia on 28th June 2018 with a resounding participation of 130 government school teachers representing Arts, Science, Mathematics, Technology & Engineering streams. The programme focuses on four key areas that massively impacts the paradigm shift of the education system in Sri Lanka namely, STEAM Education, Coding for School Kids, MakerSpaces & Entrepreneurial Thinking.
Sessions were conducted by Ms. Dilrukshi Gamage, Google Scholar Award winner - 2017, Mr. Chamil Kohona, Senior Software Architect – Zone 24X7, Ms. Emesha Pinto Jayawardene, Director Operations - Matrix Institute of Information Technology and Mr. Jehan Wijesinghe, CEO & Co-Founder – Igniter Space and the sessions were very interactive with practical sessions included.
The workshop was a great success resulting in very positive feedback from the teachers. Educate to Innovate programs will be implemented covering 5 provinces, impacting 2000 teachers across the island during 2018.
The next generation of the workforce should unleash their talents in the unknown jobs, in the future. Hence, teachers play a pivotal role in creating that future ready workforce . and should be a role model to students, dynamic, explorative, creative and innovative, thus the students will naturally get on-board to the next era of innovations” – This was the message shared among teachers via the sessions.
